• Iran native A. Eddy Zai speaks Farsi, Urdu and French in addition to English. But he's betting the future of his 4-year-old Cleveland Group of Cos. on the universal language of business and the benefits of service to companies. Since moving to Cleveland from New York City in 1998 to start a family and to be near the Kirtland family of his wife, Tina, Mr. Zai has launched Cleveland Group, a management consulting business with multiple specialized units. With its own staff, Cleveland Group provide services for companies ranging from construction to real estate brokerage and insurance. Moreover, inside his company's operations center in Eastlake, Mr. Zai has installed eight offices to serve as an incubator-like beachhead for foreign companies to launch operations here. He argues the offices help transplanted companies get down to business quicker by avoiding hassles such as connecting phones. So far, Mr. Zai has sold two Israeli companies on Cleveland and is trying to bag another eight. Tom Sudow, executive director of the Beachwood Chamber of Commerce, describes Mr. Zai as "a true leader for the region." "(Mr. Zai), a Muslim, has developed a strong working relationship with Israeli business leaders, being able to easily bridge the perceived problems amongst Israelis and Muslims," Mr. Sudow said. Howard Gudell, president of the Ohio-Israel Chamber of Commerce, another trade group with which Mr. Zai works, agrees. "As we in Northeast Ohio look to attract overseas investment, Mr. Zai has established himself as an important resource," he said. For his part, Mr. Zai argues that the needs of business transcend religious differences. He cites the many ethnic communities living near one another in Jerusalem as proof that people of different faiths can work together. Mr. Zai learned to adapt to new cities the hard way: by moving repeatedly. As a child, he fled Tehran with his family in 1977 ahead of the Iranian revolution because his father, as an industrialist, was associated with the late Shah of Iran. He grew up in London, then attended prep school in Switzerland until he studied business at Boston University. When his father's commodity trading business failed during the Persian Gulf War, Mr. Zai had to leave college without graduating. He went to New York to make his way in the textile business. An entrepreneur at heart, Mr. Zai is trying something new by moving into real estate development. He has built two homes in Mentor on a speculative basis, selling one so far, and he plans to build a 36-unit condo complex in Eastlake.
