  REDDING, Calif. - Shasta College hosted a business and finance mixer at the IOOF Hall in downtown Redding, giving students the chance to connect face-to-face with professionals already working in the industry. Nearly 20 local employers, from accounting firms to financial service companies, filled the hall to help students make professional connections even before they graduate.Organizers say events like this are more important than ever as students navigate a changing economy and a workforce being shaped by things like artificial intelligence. "The business world, and the world as we know it, is really being disrupted in an amazing and meaningful way right now, specifically around the world of artificial intelligence being used in the business," said Carrie Ferchaud, CEO of the Job Training Center.Shasta College graduate Nicholas Manes says despite the rise of AI, most people still value the personal connection that comes from working directly with someone they trust. "The AI's that we do use for questions or little things like that, it's very handy, but it's still very much a human-to-human kind of connection," Manes said.Event organizers say the mixer has continued to grow in recent years, leading them to move the event to the larger Oddfellows Hall in downtown Redding. "We moved downtown, a little down the street. We gave students and employers a little bit more space to network and create relationships," said Kendal Geraci, program coordinator at Shasta College.Students say those relationships can make a big difference as they prepare to enter the workforce and begin building their careers in Northern California. Shasta College student Liliana Scholting said she made interesting connections at the event."Yes, I have. It's been great in there. I've been talking to a lot of people. It's been a lot of fun," Scholting said.Shasta College officials say one of the goals of the event is to help cultivate local talent and keep more business and finance graduates in Shasta County. College leaders plan to continue hosting mixers like this each semester to help connect students with local employers and career opportunities.
